Motivate Celebrates Earth Day

We celebrate Mother Earth with each mile we pedal but Earth Day is a great opportunity for us to reflect on how those many miles add up to big change.

Last year alone, riders on Motivate systems reduced CO2 emissions by 29,625,723 lbs, with 15,797,817 of those lbs coming from Citi Bike riders. And a recent study using data from Washington, D.C.’s Capital Bikeshare shows that bike share has the potential to reduce even more pollutants harmful to human health by alleviating traffic congestion.

It was this track record that inspired Generation Investment Management, a well-respected firm with a focus on bolstering sustainable businesses, to make a recent investment in Motivate. Their support recognizes bike share’s potential as a weapon in the fight against climate change.

While we were honored to receive it, we do not plan to rest on our laurels: in fact, we are constantly working to make our operations even greener, by using bike trailers to rebalance bikes and spearheading initiatives that reduce our vehicle idling time (which we did, by 32% in just five months). And we will continue to look for other ways to lead the charge on sustainability.

Locally, many of our systems use Earth Day as an opportunity to get even more residents excited about using a sustainable way to get around: NYC’s Citi Bike will offer a “free ride day” while our teams in Portland, Chattanooga, Columbus, and the Boston area will all participate in sustainability fairs. Portland’s BIKETOWN will also sponsor a ride with the Corporate Sustainability Collective, a group of “green team” representatives from large and midsize businesses, and both Hubway and Citi Bike will support their cities’ “Car-Free Days.” Finally, our Bike for the Earth challenge encouraged our teams to ride all week long.

We hope you celebrate Earth Day by taking a ride, and maybe you’ll even make it a daily habit!
