To help get Boston-area residents psyched to shake off winter and pedaling again, Hubway launched a fun-filled tournament dubbed #HubwayUnicornMadness.

“Unicorn” in this context isn’t a billion dollar start-up. It refers to uniquely wrapped bike share bikes that stand out from the herd.

Motivate has used unicorn bikes to celebrate Pride Month and the return of spring, inspire climate action and civic engagement, and even to support hometown sports teams. And riders love unicorn bikes, often choosing to ride them over 50% more than the rest of the herd. Sponsors love them too; unicorn bikes are a fun way to bring a social media contest to life, encouraging participants to share highly visual content from their everyday commutes.

This March, Hubway has initiated a tournament of its own between all eight of its past unicorn bikes, inviting the public to vote on its favorites. Taking into account public opinion, the total distance each bike traveled and the total number of trips each hosted, Hubway will ultimately crown one of the bikes the winner and gift generous prizes, including Red Sox gear, free Hub On Wheels registrations, ice cream, and more, in a drawing for riders who voted or took each unicorn for a spin along the way. The contest features three rounds, the last of which will conclude on April 4th with the unveiling of the winning unicorn bike.

Speaking of wins, Hubway has had a lot to celebrate this past year. The system expanded significantly, installing more than 30 new stations throughout the Roxbury, Dorchester, and East Boston, grew its annual membership to 14K, celebrated its fifth birthday and reached the five million trips milestone.

As the warm weather rolls in, Hubway is gearing up for its busiest months. All signs point to an equally successful 2017.
