On October 21st, 2016, Hubway, the Boston area’s beloved 5-year-old bike share, reached a big milestone: 5 million rides!

As if that didn’t give Hubway full license to brag, here are a few more numbers it can tout: 5 million rides translates to 9,206,649 miles; 395,054,024 calories burned; and 1,721,460 gallons of gasoline saved!

Pretty impressive, wouldn’t you agree?

The lucky two riders who rang in the 5 millionth ride and kicked off the next 5 mil won themselves a free Hubway Annual Membership, a fresh Hubway t-shirt, and a brand new pair of New Balance sneaks.

Whether Citi Bike was hitting the 10 million trip mark for the year, three months earlier than last year, or Portland’s BIKETOWN was exceeding expectations by logging over 128,000 rides in the system’s first three months, this fall has warranted its fair share of celebrations across all of Motivate’s systems.

From coast to coast (and in between!) cyclists are taking the streets by storm and demonstrating that bike share is an essential part of our public transit system in the world’s most exciting and innovative cities.

With 184 stations throughout Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, and Somerville, Hubway is no exception to that rule, and we can’t wait to see what lies ahead.

Congratulations to the hardworking Hubway team and to its loyal riders, who are already well on their way to the next 5 mil.
