BIKE TO VOTE: Ford GoBike Announces Free Rides on Election Day
For the first time ever, Ford GoBike to provide free rides on Election Day; aims to increase civic participation and reduce barriers to voting
Riders can obtain free Access Pass on November 6th with code BIKETOVOTE in the Ford GoBike app
BAY AREA – Ford GoBike will offer free rides on Election Day, Ford Go Bike leadership announced today. Lack of transportation options has been shown to be a major barrier to voting nationwide and Ford GoBike’s new effort aims to provide Bay Area residents who live near one of Ford GoBike’s more than 300 bike share stations with a quick, convenient, and no-cost transportation option on Election Day. On November 6th, riders can unlock an Access Pass for free, valid for 24 hours of unlimited 30-minute trips with the code BIKETOVOTE in the Ford GoBike app.
“We’re excited to help the Bay Area pedal to the polls this Election Day,” said Emily Stapleton, Ford GoBike General Manager. “As voters make their plans for November 6th, we encourage communities from San Francisco to San Jose that are served by our bike share network to use bike share and take advantage of the no-cost rides as they fulfil their civic duty.”
According to one study by The Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, twenty-nine percent of young Americans surveyed said that transportation was a reason that they did not vote in the 2016 presidential election. Fifteen percent of surveyed youth said that lack of transportation to their polling place was a “major factor” for not voting. This number is even higher for youth of color, of which thirty-eight percent said that lack of transportation played a role for not voting. Ford GoBike’s free and fun transportation option on Election Day aims to reduce this barrier to voting, gets more individuals to the polls and facilitate important civic engagement.
Ford GoBike is taking part in this effort alongside Motivate-operated bike share networks nationwide. Motivate is the largest bike share operator in North America. In 2017, 80% of all bike share trips in America were completed on a Motivate system. The bike share networks that Motivate operates include Citi Bike (New York & Jersey City); Divvy (Chicago); Bluebikes (Boston-metro); Capital Bikeshare (Washington D.C.); Nice Ride Minnesota (Minneapolis); Ford GoBike (Bay Area); BIKETOWN (Portland, OR) and CoGo (Columbus, OH).
Ford GoBike’s promo codes and free rides are offered in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations, subject to Motivate and Ford GoBike’s terms and conditions and are not intended to induce, nor are conditioned on, the act of voting or voting for or against any particular candidate or measure.
