The first 2400 bikes produced by Motivate are rolling onto the streets of New York and receiving rave reviews from riders. The bikes were designed by custom bike builder and designer Ben Serotta, who has designed and built bikes for numerous Olympic racing teams and some of the world’s most elite athletes.

Motivate took over operation of the company in late 2014 with financial backing from the CEOs of Equinox, Related Companies and other private investors and immediately began assessing the software that powered the various systems it operates as well as the company’s supply chain, two issues that had plagued the prior owners.

It became clear that producing its own bikes would allow the company to better meet demand from customers to expand and enhance bike share systems across the country and around the globe.

Serotta worked closely with lead mechanics from across Motivate’s systems to rapidly assess opportunities for improving on the current bike. Together they pinpointed parts that broken more often than they should and parts that took the longest to repair when they did break.

From there Serotta helped source higher-quality parts to replace the ones that were breaking too often, and switched out some components including the headset and the rear hub for ones that are quicker to repair. He swapped the seats that had been collecting rainwater, freezing and splitting in colder environments, for ones that have a cut-out, making the seats more comfortable, but also quicker to dry, and less likely to split. Serotta also completely redesigned the frame, fenders and handlebars for the new bike.

Kudos to @CitiBikeNYC on the sleek new bike design. They’re much lighter and more manageable thanks!

That being said, the new @CitiBikeNYC @motivate_co bikes are better in every way. Only thing I had to think about was the new kickstands.
