A recent survey conducted by the Portland Bureau of Transportation and Portland’s bike share system, BIKETOWN, shows that BIKETOWN is taking the nation’s bike capital by storm.

Launched in July, 2016, BIKETOWN is is already boosting the tourism industry, local businesses, and reducing automobile use. Popular from the start, BIKETOWN’s ridership swiftly exceeded all expectations with 167,132 trips in just 6 months, and today, more than 38,000 people have ridden the bright orange sneaker bikes. The recent survey sought to hone in on that success.

Of the 2,400 BIKETOWN riders were surveyed, 26% said they used the bike share system instead of driving. And 64% of the respondents said they were biking more because of the program, confirming bike share can significantly reduce a city’s carbon footprint and improve health outcomes.

The survey also indicated BIKETOWN is bolstering the local economy–71% of visitors to Portland reported they used the bikes to reach shopping and dining destinations, and 69% indicated they were more likely to shop at businesses that were located near bike share stations.
