Recently, Motivate linked up with Recycle a Bicycle (RAB), an innovative and beloved NYC non-profit and one of our close partners, for a staff outing. Motivate staff helped RAB with a “bike build” — refurbishing bikes for kids.

Launched in 1994, RAB provides youth with job training and environmental education through programs like Earn-A-Bike, which awards students who volunteer with bike mechanics classes and a bike frame upon which to build their own wheels. RAB also runs two retail shops where youth gain job experience and provide affordable re-furbished bikes for New Yorkers. In the past year, more than 1,000 RAB youth collectively refurbished 500 bicycles–significantly reducing NYC’s landfill waste– and pedaled 24,000 miles!

Citi Bike has hired many RAB alumni to work on its fleet over the years. With union jobs that pay above living wage, it’s a win for all parties involved. So, when offered the opportunity to give back to RAB, our staff turned up in full force, refurbishing an impressive 27 bikes in under four hours. As you can see, a good time was had by all.
