Nike joins growing list of global brands supporting bike share

Motivate, a global leader in bike share, today announced a major partnership with Nike, the world’s leading designer, marketer, and distributor of authentic athletic footwear and apparel and the City of Portland, Oregon, that will support and expand the city’s new bike share system. Thanks to Nike’s partnership, the new system will launch with 1,000 bikes, up from a planned 600. The announcement is the latest in a series of partnerships that Motivate has secured in cities around the country in support of public bike share systems.

Nike’s collaboration with Motivate reflects bike share’s growing popularity with global brands as a way to demonstrate their commitment to cities and reach urban consumers who have made bike share a beloved part of their daily lives. Motivate’s success in Portland follows a recent expansion of Citi’s sponsorship of Citi Bike in New York from an already-impressive $40 million to more than $110 million, securing its place as the largest bike share sponsorship in North America. Motivate also secured industry-leading levels of support for Jersey City’s new bike share program via a combination of title and founding sponsors. Industrywide, more and more brands including Citi, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Alaska Airlines, Hulu and Santander have made major investments in bike share programs – from London to Seattle and many places in between.

“There’s simply no better way to reach an active, engaged urban population than through bike share systems that are used 24/7 and run throughout the world’s most exciting cities,” said Jay Walder, CEO of Motivate. “Riders connect in a busy, crowded city, with other people, the environment and themselves. Bike share makes people feel good – and that’s a great thing to be associated with.”

Bike share provides a dynamic alternative to traditional static outdoor advertising. As sought-after city residents increasingly look for more authentic and organic experiences, bike share allows brands to become part of an experience woven into the fabric of cities and the lives of riders. From the mobile app riders use to the bikes they ride and the docking stations where they leave the bike, every aspect of a rider’s commute includes an opportunity for the rider to experience the partner or sponsor’s brand, forming positive associations repeatedly over time. Partner and sponsor opportunities with Motivate’s bike share systems include title and secondary sponsorships, fitness challenges and other creative promotions as well as advertising across bike share’s physical and virtual real estate.
