Columbus, OH – Mayor Michael Coleman announced today that Medical Mutual has committed to a $1.25 million, five-year grant to support and strengthen the popular CoGo Bike Share program. This support comes from the Medical Mutual of Ohio Charitable Fund, administered by the Columbus Foundation.
“I wish CoGo Bike Share a very happy first birthday,” said Mayor Coleman. “Medical Mutual has provided a gift to the entire community by helping to sustain this popular program and I am truly appreciative.”
In recognition of Medical Mutual’s generous grant, CoGo bikes, vans, and stations across the City will soon sport an updated design with the Medical Mutual logo. CoGo will partner with Medical Mutual to promote active transportation choices, like bike sharing, and how these activities can lead to improved health and wellness.
“As a new tenant in downtown Columbus, we are happy to be involved in this celebration and partnership with the city,” said Jared Chaney, Medical Mutual of Ohio Executive Vice President. “We can’t think of a better way to help expand and celebrate such a healthy commuting alternative in downtown Columbus, which also fits perfectly with our wellness efforts in promoting exercise and a healthier lifestyle, community-wide.”
Recent government and private studies show that biking just two to three miles per day can provide substantial health benefits, and cities with such bike sharing programs are shown to have lowered their obesity rates. In Columbus, the CoGo Bike Share program has become extraordinarily popular for both commuters and recreational riders alike. Since CoGo launched in late July 2013, bicyclists have taken more than fifty thousand trips, riding more than 120,000 miles, and collectively burning an estimated 5.2 million calories.
